    Course Description

Verbal skills can be a challenge for music therapists in any population. In early childhood, when young children have a wide variety of developmental abilities, regardless of having a diagnosis or not, verbal skills are particularly important. This module guides participants through a variety of ideas about the non-musical aspects of communicating with young children to maximize the effectiveness of music therapy sessions.

The module begins with the basics about verbal skills, such as paraphrasing, reflecting, checking in, and summarizing, and looks at some music therapy research literature from Paul Nolan and a textbook summary of verbal skills for music therapists by Elizabeth Schwartz. You are encouraged to do some activities on your own that are part of the CMTE time structure so you can practice integrating the skills lectured on in the module.
